Mark Dharmaratnum
Mark Dharmaratnam grew up in Hamilton, Ontario and comes from a musical family. His father was a high school music teacher, his mother plays piano, his sister plays saxophone and flute and his brother is a professional clarinet player with the Navy. He started playing trumpet when he was twelve and went on to receive a Bachelors Degree in Music Education from the University of Western Ontario and a Masters Degree in Performance from Northwestern University in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Dharmaratnam studied with Erik Schultz, Vincent Cichowicz and Adolph Herseth. He has been a member of the Great Lakes Brass Quintet, Symphony Nova Scotia, the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra and has subbed in many top orchestras in Canada. They include the National Arts Center Orchestra, the Hamilton Philharmonic, Kitchener-Waterloo Orchestra, Windsor Symphony, Orchestra London, McGill Chamber Orchestra and the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

Mr. Dharmaratnam has also had a lot experience playing in and working with bands. He was a member of the Northwestern University Wind Ensemble under John P. Paynter and the Weston Silver Band under Morley Calvert (founder of the LCB). He has played in military bands in Toronto, Halifax and Montreal. He conducted the Scotia Winds in Halifax and the military bands in Halifax and Montreal. He has also conducted the National Band of the Naval Reserve during cross Canada tours. Mr. Dharmaratnam adjudicated band festivals in London, Ontario and Halifax and has been the trumpet instructor at Acadia University in Wolfville, Nova Scotia and at Upper Canada College in Toronto.

Currently, Mr. Dharmaratnam holds a position with the National Ballet of Canada Orchestra, is a performer/director in the 438 Squadron Band in St Hubert, directs the Lakeshore Concert Band and works as a free lancer. He is married to Chantal Boivin, a violist in the MSO, and has a daughter Jennifer, and a son named Thomas.
